"Welcome to Kenya"

This report documents widespread police extortion of asylum seekers trying to reach three camps near the Kenyan town of Dadaab, the world's largest refugee settlement. The research is based on in-depth interviews with 102 Somali refugees (24 adult males, 74 adult females, two girls and two boys) in two of the three refugee camps (Dagahaley and Ifo) near Dadaab town in Kenya's North Eastern Province. The results of the interviews reveal that police is involved in violence, arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention in inhuman and degrading conditions, threats of deportation, and wrongful prosecution for "unlawful presence" to extort money from the new arrivals - men, women, and children alike. Furthermore, the report suggests the areas of protection,  where UNHCR has failed to put in place an effective monitoring system to collect information on abuses.
